Get Dirty: an a-MAZE-ing adventure

Well, this was an interesting, wet, and dirty day. We boogied our butts out to the Chilliwack Corn Maze for today’s adventure! But here’s the kicker, we didn’t just find a corn maze…we found two MUD MAZES!

We have had rain most of this week out here in the Fraser Valley so we were expecting it to be a wet adventure. We were not anticipating how much mud we actually found. When we arrived we had two options for this maze; the shorter drier (and we say this lightly) corn maze, or the longer muddier maze. So, let’s get dirty!

We took along Riley’s raincoat for him, though we didn’t seem to need it for this adventure, though he was still filthy when we left.

We WANDER-ed around the farm a bit and checked out some of their activities. Like the Apple Barn, the Pillow Floor was a hit with the kiddos! They also have a bunch of fire pits so you can sit and relax by the fire with your hot cocoa from the Snack Shack. We went and said hello to a ram…Riley wanted to herd the poor ram and started growling and poking his nose at the fence.

We wandered around the playpark where you’ll find jungle gyms, obstacle courses, swings, and a few other rides for the littles. Then we went into the fray! Into the mud and into the fun!

We were warned at the entrance that the shorter maze had gotten a bit boggy over the week of rain, but was nothing compared to the big maze. So we started in the short maze and figured we would see how we do. Onward ho!

Twists and turns, we hit dead ends all over the place – this was not an overly challenging maze though we went through it backwards. But it was definitely muddy! Riley wasn’t too sure about this whole wet dirt thing at first. Then we went through the first big mud puddle and we was all “I guess I’m getting mucky” and was ready for mud the rest fo the maze. I was all game for tackling the big maze next, but my husband…not so much! Big Big BIG muddle puddle at the entrance to the big maze and he was like ‘Nope!’. Riley was all ‘nope’ about it too. Apparently I’m the only one who really wanted to get dirty today.

Each year the Chilliwack Corn Maze has a different theme and different pattern. This year’s maze was inspired by and featured “The Boy Who Spoke To The Earth” by Chris Burkard. The inspiration for the maze and a little bit of the reasoning for the selection can be found on the Corn Maze webpage here. The maze itself features the night sky and trees throughout the design making dead ends frequent! Trees have many branches and few trunks that lead to one another.

We slipped and slid our way between the corn rows for about an hour while we played out the story of the boy in Burkard’s book. We took wrong turns, met families enjoying their adventures, and crossed an old wood bridge in the middle of the corn rows. We splashed in some mud and had a few laughs.

Then before we called it a day, we took a turn through the pumpkin patch. As it is so close to halloween, the pumpkins are definitely looking a little sparse, though very interestingly shaped!

Riley’s paws and legs were getting saturated in mud so the towel in the truck was a beautiful sight!

Next year we will do the big maze for sure, bring on the mud!

Happy Tails!
